Five arrested in fatal shooting of Swansea man

(WIS) – Lexington County sheriff’s deputies have arrested five teenagers in connection with the deadly shooting of a man in his home near Swansea on Wednesday.

Frederick Lavern Jones, Jr., 16, of Gaston was charged as an adult with murder, armed robbery, criminal conspiracy and possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Jones was arrested hours after the shooting Wednesday.

Deputies also arrested Gauge Christian Miller, 18, of Neeses, Alexis Maria Olds, 17, of Swansea, Gerkedric Shakur Walker, 18, of Gaston, and Jordan Russell Wall, 18, of Gaston. All were charged with the same counts as Jones.

Miller, Olds, Walker and Wall were taken to the Lexington County Detention Center. Jones is in the custody of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the house on Sam Austin Road at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday for a man who had been shot. Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher identified the man as Larry Bryan Williams, 41, and said he died at the scene.

The sheriff’s department says Williams knew all of the suspects. According to the arrest warrants, the five teens went to Williams’ home to rob him and shot him in the torso.

“This is the most senseless homicide that I have seen in my life. This is every homeowner’s nightmare,” Sheriff Lewis McCarty said. “You have no defense against a crime like this.”

“This is a tragedy on multiple levels,” McCarty said. “The young people who perpetrated this killing have ruined their lives. Most of the young people in this case had educational opportunities beyond high school that were awaiting them.”
